TED Talks are recorded professionally, and most feature one speaker at a time who is trying to communicate clearly, making the audio a relatively easy challenge for automated captioning systems. (CR funded the study, which is currently under peer review ahead of publication.) To simplify things for our testing, CR and our partners at Northeastern and Pomona settled on audio from the popular TED lecture series. Plus, even just among English speakers, there are countless accents, dialects, and regional quirks to account for. Any given recording might have patchy audio quality or people speaking over one another.

It’s hard for software to get transcriptions exactly right. “Hearing folks wouldn’t accept unintelligible audio. He often has to give up on a video that’s poorly captioned and go looking for a more accessible alternative. “And it also imposes a cognitive load trying to compensate for errors and puzzling out the meaning.”įor Albright, an error-ridden transcript can be a deal-breaker. “If there are too many errors, you might not even be able to figure out the gist,” he says. Vogler, who is deaf, advocates for technology that works better for people with hearing disabilities. “If captions are wildly inaccurate, you can’t figure out what the whole conversation is about,” says Christian Vogler, PhD, director of the Technology Access Project at Gallaudet University. They also matter for people who aren’t completely comfortable with English, who might use captions to keep up with a recorded college lecture or watch how-to videos on YouTube or Facebook.Īn estimated 11.4 million Americans ages 5 and older have a hearing disability, and over 25 million Americans ages 5 and older don’t speak English very well, according to census data. “To be able to partake and participate in supporting some of the largest organizations, both private and public, in a place that’s so powerful in its legacy of service is really exciting.These flaws can cause problems for people who are deaf or hard of hearing and often use auto-captions to participate in work meetings and one-on-one calls or to just enjoy online entertainment. “I have an affinity and a real respect for what the public sector delivers to so many of us on a day in and day out basis and the challenges they face,” Ludden says. and spent 20 years supporting federal healthcare initiatives through her work with Anthem, is also very familiar with. The crossover between the public and private sectors is something that Ludden, who was born in D.C. “My dream is that our engagement in the National Capital Region is going to yield a high performing workforce that’s equipped to solve significant global problems and contribute to better outcomes for government and industry,” Jones Miller says. Now she aims to offer an innovative opportunity for students that will meld government, industry and academia in a way that benefits the National Capital Region. Prior to joining Northeastern, Jones Miller worked on Capitol Hill and for the Department of Defense as principal deputy assistant secretary of defense for legislative affairs. The university’s vision for the campus is epitomized in Jamie Jones Miller, the dean of the Arlington campus. When the campus fully opens in the spring, there will be a floor dedicated to research and a floor dedicated to learning, with opportunities for collaboration between the two.Īt the heart of the Arlington campus is the co-mingling of the public and private sectors through partnerships with government entities, industry leaders and the community. “We’ll have engineering and computer science, fields that are evolving at a pace in which our partners need an educational and research partner that can keep up with their needs and the demands of those areas.” Photo by: Brookfield Properties “Based on what we have learned from our partners, much of our programming focuses on resiliency,” Ludden says. Mary Ludden, Northeastern’s senior vice president for global network and strategic initiatives, says the campus will take advantage of its proximity to the nation’s capital and the many defense and tech industry leaders in the region through strategic partnerships.

The initial focus of the campus will be on security, resiliency and technology, matching the political and economic drivers of Northern Virginia and D.C. Located in the Rosslyn neighborhood, the campus will welcome its first cohort of graduate students virtually this fall, with plans to open for in-person instruction in spring 2023. Northeastern’s campus in Arlington, Virginia, the latest addition to its expanding global university system, will give the university a foothold in the Washington, D.C., area, one of the fastest growing regions in the U.S.
